STRENGTH, GRACE, BALANCE are keynotes of the Russians, with their long bodies,
long legs, long tails and beautifully sculptured heads. Nothing is extreme,
nothing is overdone, and all is in proportion and harmony – as much in their
affectionate, gentle but very positive personalities as in their elegant yet
strong-boned, well-muscled physique.
The breed originated in Russia but is now widespread. The first of these lovely
cats was seen in Britain in the 19
th
century, brought as trade goods or companions by ships on the Baltic run from
Arkangelsk – hence once known as Archangel cats. In Australia there has been
considerable input from Russians bred in Britain. The cats you see pictured
here may well be descended from some of
those robust travellers with their dense blue coats and exotic air.
Well known for adaptability, here in Australia they thrive from the tropical
north to the southern highlands and Tasmania. They will be happy as house cats
in small homes or large, are ideal for apartments, will be at ease with
themselves when you are out, and delighted when you return. Usually they mesh
well with other pets, and will adopt people of all ages – but don't fancy a lot
of noise and commotion.
The Russians have a wise and regal air but a non-fussy nature. They will share
your most mundane activities, pose impressively or with casual ease,
problem-solve with practical intelligence, and even the most imposing stud cats
are usually big softies for a pick-up and a cuddle.
